LAST NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR

This is the last newsletter of the school year and it is a bumper edition with lots of information. Any further updates will be done via our facebook page, website or school app.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATION - TUESDAY 11TH DECEMBER AT 5.45PM

This is our annual event to celebrate another great year at Te Totara.  Here is some information to help make it a special event:

  • It is a school event, so children need to be in a clean and tidy uniform and will be together as a school and are under the control of school staff.
  • Please leave your child with us; we will take care of them.
  • Students will need to stay through the whole event.
  • There will be very limited parking available at the school car park and none in the turning bay.
  • It will be best to find a car park on a nearby street and walk.
  • It is like a concert in a park so bring a picnic, a rug to sit on, something to eat and drink and enjoy a variety concert.
  • We use the hill behind Ra and Earth as outdoor stages where children perform.
  • Toilets are open in the Ra and Earth blocks.
  • Pre-schoolers are welcome to use the playground away from the performers so they don’t distract from the performance.
  • Other children not involved in the school are asked to be respectful and if they want to play, then the court area is a good place. There are likely to be over 2500 people at the event so we strongly advise walking to the event.
  • Please NO umbrellas as it blocks the view of people behind. Low set chairs only are advisable if needed.
  • NO dogs are allowed on our school grounds.
  • We will have a "Paparazzi” section at the front for parents of those performing to use to get a good photo.
  • If the weather is not good, we will postpone to Wednesday 12th December 2018, same time.
  • Notifications will be put on the school Facebook page, school app and the website.
  • The event is weather dependent, so may be cancelled at the last moment, but we will do our best to let everyone know as early as possible.
  • At the end of the event we will need to stagger people leaving due to Health & Safety, so please be prepared to wait a little time. Announcements will be made to help.

CLASSES FOR 2019

We have appreciated the input of students, teachers and parents in helping support the decision making process for classes in 2019. Considerable time, skill and energy has gone into putting together the organisation for 2019.

The class for each child will go live at 3.30pm tomorrow, Friday 7th December, using the same parent log in as for Learning Plans. Teachers will also go over the  classes tomorrow to answer any queries from students before they go home. Details on how to view the classes are in your Learning Plan pack that was sent home last week.

Children will visit their new classes on Thursday 13th December from 1.30pm - 2.00pm. We will do our very best to get the new teacher there but this may be a challenge as some teachers are working in other schools.

Some points around our classes:

  • We do realise that this is a time of change and that this can cause anxiety, it can also be viewed as an opportunity to experience new classmates and a teacher with a wonderful range of new skills
  • We deliberately "mix up” our children so by the time they progress through the school they have been exposed to a wide range of their peer group, building valuable and important relationships within the year group cohort
  • We do find that the first transition within the school i.e. Year 1 to Year 2 can cause some concern as the children may be with others that are unknown, similarly moving to a new area of the school. This is understandable and we ask that families support the move with a positive approach
  • We do ask that  if there are any issues around class placement that families support what is in place and if there are any challenges liaise very early with the new teacher in 2019.
  • If there are ongoing concerns then please feel free to contact School Leaders after three weeks of the new school year which allows for the child to settle in and build valuable relationships
  • Any requests to change a class from now on is highly likely to be declined as a class change can create a "knock on” effect and not give an opportunity to the child to take on the challenge of a new teacher and make the most of this new opportunityTo find out more about our approach to how we put our classes together, please see our website..  How we put our classes together

STAFFING UPDATE

An update on our staffing for 2019:

We welcome Rochelle Lingard to our school. Rochelle is an experienced Teacher who will be teaching our older children in the Year 5&6 area. Rochelle comes to us from St Columba’s School and is well known to a number of our current staff.

We also welcome new Teachers to our profession in Ashleigh Morgan and Brendan Gauld. They have both spent time with us as part of their training. We are always delighted to have new Teachers at our School. Of the current staff, seven have started their teaching careers here, so we are delighted to welcome two more!

Also joining us is Teresa Lincoln, who is an experienced teacher and is currently at Orini Combined school. Teresa has a real real strength  with Junior children and will be teaching in the Year 2 area.

We also farewell a number of staff who are moving on. Mark Macleod is moving to Raglan and has secured a position at Te Mata School. We have valued Mark’s wonderful skills and know that the children in his new school will be fortunate to have him as their teacher.

It is also farewell to Lauren Loye, who will be working further in the family business. Lauren started her teaching career here and we have valued her wonderful work with the children. We will likely see Lauren here in a part time capacity helping out next year.

Brenda Wollen will be moving away from a full time role next year and we look forward to seeing her around the school in a part time capacity.

We farewell Sarah Hansen, who is moving to teach with our good neighbours at Rototuna Primary, we thank her for her work and the PTA will miss her really helpful contributions.

Next year both Renee Morgan and Rebecca Gardyne will be working at school in a part-time capacity before being on Parental Leave. We thank them both for being accommodating about working part time so a teacher can  be employed throughout the year in the classes that they might have taught in, allowing continuity for the children.

2019 SCHOOL ORGANISATION

Next term will see some changes to Leadership Team.

URGENT - ALL LIBRARY BOOKS DUE BACK TO SCHOOL NOW

All library books should have been returned by Monday this week, however we still have 750 books outstanding.  Could you please have a good look for any library books around the house, no students should have any books at home.  Please return these to the Library urgently.

HOLIDAY READING

Over the holidays, students can experience the "summer slump”.  This is a loss in reading achievement over summer if students stop reading.  Providing some fun reading experiences during the holidays can help prevent the summer slump.  Here are a few ways to encourage children to read:

  • Read aloud to your child.  It is the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for their own success in reading.  It stimulates their imagination and improves their language and listening skills.
  • Encourage your child to read anything - the TV guide, magazines, joke books, recipes, travel guides, video game instructions…
  • Find a series for your child to get hooked on.  This will make choosing their next book to read easier.  A recent survey showed that the primary factor in choosing a book for 7-12 year olds was a familiar character or series.
  • Find books that match your child’s interests e.g. arts and crafts, skateboarding, cooking, animals.
  • Read graphic novels.  These comic books can be really appealing for children.
  • Try out ebooks and audiobooks with our free Wheelers ePlatform.  You will need to contact our Librarian, Michelle Simms, for a username and password if your child does not already have one at: librarian@tetotara.school.nz  Audiobooks are a great distraction on long car trips!

LIBRARY OPEN DATES

We are happy to confirm that our library will be open in the school holidays on these dates:

Wednesday 19th December1.00pm - 4.00pm

Wednesday 9th January1.00pm - 4.00pm

Wednesday 16th January1.00pm - 4.00pm

Wednesday 23th January1.00pm - 4.00pm

Wednesday 30th January1.00pm - 4.00pm

If you are staying in Hamilton then we would love to see you.  It is a nice way to meet up with friends, stay cool in our lovely air-conditioned library, and take home some good books to read.  This year we are also running activities from 1.15pm - 2.15pm, starting with our popular Lego Challenge cards. Like Te Totara Primary School Library on Facebook for updates about these activities.

In order to borrow books during the holidays, students must be accompanied by a parent and have no outstanding invoices or overdue library books.  We will increase our lending limits to a maximum of six books per students, and each parent can also borrow up to six books per child in their name.

All books will be due back by Friday 8th February, 2018 (the end of the first week back of school).  This means that if you are away for some of the holidays you don’t have to worry about books becoming overdue.

OUR SCHOOL OVER THE HOLIDAYS

Our school will be a busy place over the holidays with a number of projects happening, this includes:

  • Construction of a playground between the Hall and Orion, due to be completed by the start of the School year
  • Exterior Painting of most of the school
  • Carpet being replaced in Orion, Matawhero, Milky Way & Marama
  • Court Cover Project. There has been a delay in the start time which is now mid January and we don't expect this to be completed until March

Please be aware that there will be areas of the school that will be out of bounds during this time for Health & Safety reasons we do ask that you watch out for these and comply with any signage.

FAREWELL

As you may know through the email our Board Chair Rod Carpinter sent to families earlier this week, I will be completing my time at Te Totara at the end of the school year. I will be working as one of 27 Leadership Advisers to new Principals in New Zealand. I am hoping that some of my 31 years as a Principal may be of help to new colleagues as they start their Principalship.

It has been my absolute pleasure to have been the foundation Principal here and I know that there are very capable hands to ensure the School remains the wonderful place it is. My thanks to staff, families Board of Trustees and our wonderful children for making it a very special place. The values of our STARS are precious and I know these will be the base on which the School continues to grow.

Kind Regards

Brian Sheedy

COMMUNITY NOTICES:

We are often asked to put Community Notices in our newsletter. Due to the large number of requests, we now have a "Community Notices” section on the notice board in the School Office, where you will find more information on the notices below. Please note that this does not necessarily imply School endorsement of these notices.
